In our APhA-ASP Chapter, we have three committees that help create additional opportunities for our student pharmacists to become involved in patient care projects, community outreach and education, professional development, and more. Have an idea for a new committee? Let our Executive Board know!
Committee Co-Chairs: Anneslei Breyne and Victoria Li
This committee is tasked with bringing awareness to—and directing patient care activities to help manage, treat, and prevent—various chronic diseases, like diabetes, high blood pressure, or asthma. Aligned with the goals of the Operation Immunization, Operation Diabetes, and Operation Heart national patient care projects, this committee plans events that allow members to apply their knowledge outside of the classroom.
Committee Co-Chairs: Akshaya Arunkumar and Maurrisa Proffitt
This committee exists to educate the public on how to properly store and use over-the-counter and prescription medications. As future medication experts, student pharmacists on this committee plan and lead over a dozen educational field trips for local Athens-Clarke County first graders, with the goal of teaching them the difference between medicines and candy. This committee also focuses on substance use disorders and other contemporary issues related to the misuse of medications. Past events hosted by Medication Safety Committee—which is aligned with the Operation Substance Use Disorder and Operation OTC Med Safety national patient care projects—include drug takeback days, workshops for students on Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs and opioid reversal agents, educational sessions for Girl Scouts, and more!
Committee Co-Chairs: Leah Chang and Emily Duvall
Aligned with the national patient care project of the same name, this committee aims to improve reproductive and sexual health education for students and patients alike. Events hosted by this committee are often centered around hormonal contraception, the HPV vaccine (which can prevent penile, cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers), LGBTQ+ reproductive health, and sexually transmitted infections. Annually, they partner with SOAP to host a Breast Cancer Awareness Panel, featuring breast cancer survivors from among our faculty and staff.
